The golden September market for ABS and PS has kicked off smoothly!

Every September, the plastics industry looks forward to a familiar event-the anticipated rebound the recovery in the “Golden September” market. This year, the opening rally for two major commodity plastics, ABS and PS, has already unfolded as expected. But how sustainable will this trend be? Can it last throughout the entire month of September? These questions have become the biggest concerns within the industry. Currently, signs of market  warmth are emerging, but we are still some distance from a full-blown boom.

Let’s first look at ABS, the standout performer in the market. Data shows that ABS has delivered strong gains over the past two months, with price continuing to rise by late August-main grades increased by 500 to 1,300 yuan per ton compared to early August. The momentum carried into September, as robust styrene costs provided solid price support. combined  with moderate downstream inventory replenishment ahead of the holiday season, trading activity has noticeably picked up, and traders remain optimistic. The signal for a strong “Golden September” is now very clear, and a short term bullish trend with minor fluctuations appears firmly established.

In comparison, the PS market has been steady, moderate gains. With expectations of a bottom  recovery in the third quarter, current prices are within a mid year range-up by 400 to 550 yuan per ton compared to early  August for GPPS, and by 400 to 600 yuan per ton for HIPS. However, clear weakness remain: downstream operations have resumed slowly, end users are cautious in purchasing, mostly replenishing small orders as needed, with no surge in bulk stockpiling. As a result, price increases in PS have been weak and less vigorous than those in ABS.

Overall, this year’s ABS and PS markets have seen a structural recovery, but whether we can pop the champagne remains to be seen. ABS has benefited from a combination of favorable cost conditions, supply dynamics, and strong seasonal demand- three powerful factors that have driven a clear and robust upward trend. In contrast, PS has struggled with weak demand, resulting in only a slow recovery and relativity weaker price gains.

Whether the market can continue to rise will depend not only on cost-side support, but primarily on the strength of restocking by end-user industries such as home appliances and daily necessities. As long as downstream demand continue to expand, there is still room for further increase in prices of both key raw materials. The “Golden September” trend has already begun, with ABS leading the way and PS following closely behind-this differentiated market pattern is expected to persist for some time.
